#29 Music

I chose this photo to describe the word "Music". I had a very difficult time choosing which photo I would like to use since I took several of a group of figures in a sculpture on the Drake University Campus and I enjoy each one and I believe each one tells the story of "music".

I used iPhoto to edit this. I cropped, enhanced by brightening, blurred the edges, then added "vignette" to add the dark frame to the photo.

#5 Body Parts

Body- "a collective group" We sisters are a body, growing closer with time and circumstance. This photo shows us together, in body at a recent reunion. We have clasped hands to show our unity. I edited this picture on Photoscape, cropping, clarifying and adding the words and hearts to the original picture. I also used a tool that blurs the edges of the photo.

#3 Macro

Macro photography is close-up photography of usually very small subjects.

This photo is a very close up detail of part of a placemat and a ceramic bowl. All the editing I did was to crop it in iPhoto and sharpen it up a bit!



This photo is a close up detail of a corner shelf. Again, the only editing I did was to crop it, clarify it and add some contrast on iPhoto.

#40 LEtTeRs

I have spent considerable time searching out the world for objects for my "letter art". I have enjoyed making last name signs for family and friends and spelling out words with letters I find in nature. I made this collage on Photoscape, a free downloaded program in which you can choose many different options for collages. The collage feature will crop the photo to fit into the spot and you can drag the picture up and down to fill the space the way you wish.

#1 Newness

Just as a reminder or maybe you are wondering what in the world I am doing here, I teach a class in photography and have given my students an assignment to come up with one photo to describe one word. They have 40 of them, so if you look in my left margin, you will see several sites with a # sign as a post name. These are my students' posts doing exactly what I have asked of them. Give the # of the assigned word, find one photo that you think describes that word and then tell me what edits you have done to the photo. Sounds easy, but some of the words are easier than others. The students have done a wonderful job so far, so take a look at some of their blogs. I have chosen to do the assignments right along with my class, so that will explain my strange blog posts lately.



Today's photo describes the word, "Newness" assignment #1.

This is a photo of a painting I did recently. It is called "River of Tears". It was painted after I was invited to enter some of my works in an art show dealing with breast cancer awareness. I called this River of Tears because up through the middle is a dark blue stream, and there are tears near the bottom of the seemingly dead tree. If you look toward the top, you will see new growth, which is why I chose it for today's word, "Newness". I know some breast cancer survivors and they share the sorrow, the sadness, the feelings of loss and I am sure, what seems like a "river of tears", BUT after the sorrow, the loss, the tears, there is new hope, new growth, and new life! The breast cancer event, titled, "Paint the Night Pink" showcased survivors "painting the night pink" in mind, body and spirit, strutting their new stuff!!! Amazing!

I simply cropped this picture in iPhoto and upped the contrast some. That is it!

#17 Swing

This photo was edited in Photoscape. I brightened, bloomed, and added contrast. Then I added

an effect to make it look like a painting done in pointillism. You can choose the amount and size of the dots and I kept working until I could see the effect, but the pixels were not so large that all the details were lost.
